There are those who may think that Ashley Giles’ career has entered a backwater. Chief Executive at Worcestershire after a mighty career as player and Managing Director with England and head coach at Warwickshire and Lancashire, two ‘big’ counties based at Test-venue grounds? In charge at Worcester? Easy life.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Giles’ cricket life, which has involved myriad challenges, personally and professionally, on the field and off it, has entered totally different terrain. It is an adventure which he is thoroughly enjoying - and could just culminate in his biggest contribution of all to English cricket. Never mind scoring the winning runs in an Ashes Test in the ‘greatest series ever.’ Never mind 116 games for England and a fair bit of trophy-lifting with Warwickshire. Never mind an MBE for services to cricket. If Giles can pull off the challenge now in his in-tray, he will shape a treasured part of English cricket forever.
