With the expansion of the M40 motorway now connecting Birmingham to Oxford and London, land in towns like Kenilworth, Leamington and Warwick became increasingly valuable for potential property developers.
Given its close proximity to the Kenilworth Bypass, the land surrounding Leyes Lane was unsurprisingly seen as a prime location for a new housing development, one which would attract the booming commuter market from nearby Midlands towns.
In the interest of extracting as many properties as possible out of the location though, the planners sought approval to build houses immediately adjacent to the boundaries of the cricket club, a decision that put both members of the public and players alike at a vastly heightened risk of serious injury.
