The Great Escape of 2010

“It is an incredibly tricky situation we are in because we are not just talking about one or two guys out of form, it’s pretty much the whole of the top order. Warwickshire’s Rothesay County Championship triumph of 2026 is the latest addition to the long list of trophies secured by the club in its long history. But one of the greatest achievements in the Bears’ history did not culminate in silverware - just survival in the championship Division One.

On August 17, 2010, Warwickshire, coached by Ashley Giles and captained by Ian Westwood, lost all 20 wickets in a day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. What had been a difficult season hit its nadir which left the Bears in deep relegation trouble with three games left.  It was the ultimate test of character for the players and of the ability of Giles and Westwood to galvanise their team. What followed was a great escape that was the first step towards winning the County Championship just two years later.
