"For sheer sensationalism, there has been nothing in the cricket world for years to equal the happenings and scenes at Edgbaston yesterday.”
So began the report in the Birmingham Gazette on Thursday 15 June 1922 of the first day’s play between Warwickshire and Hampshire at Edgbaston. So sensational was the day’s play, that the report was not in its customary place inside the paper but on the front page.
There on the front it sat, under the headline. HAMPSHIRE ALL OUT FOR 15. It was a rather busy opening day. Warwickshire 223 all out, Hampshire 15 all out and 98 for three.
