Such a rare fusion of top-drawer talent and temperament and, perhaps most pleasing of all, from a guy that is also a good human being - courteous, grounded and humble. That’s the sort of chap we want at the top of sport!

Bethell’s completion of the set - Test, ODI and T20I centuries - aged just 22 underlined his immense abilities and the likelihood that he will play for England across the formats for years to come. It is engrossing to see such fearless, highly-skilled excellence, but as I watched Jake rise to one of the biggest occasions in world cricket, my thoughts, and I’m sure those of many Warwickshire supporters, were drawn to Dennis Amiss and Hull.
