History resonates on opening day at Edgbaston

Just as when Nottinghamshire paid their inaugural Championship visit to Birmingham in August 1922, the players never made it on to the grass on the opening day.  

The 2026 clash between the teams placed third and top respectively in Division One is a mouth-watering prospect but persistent heavy rain in Birmingham meant the covers never came off the field.  With further rain likely to affect the remaining three days, a draw appears very likely - a very frustrating scenario, though it would help ensure the remarkably tight title-race remains just as compact next week with four rounds of matches remaining.
