Keith Barker has announced his retirement from cricket with immediate effect, Warwickshire have confirmed on Tuesday.

Fast bowler Barker only returned to Edgbaston in the winter after six years away with Hampshire. Prior to his spell on the south coast, Barker had spent nine years with the Bears after dropping out football - he had been in Blackburn Rovers’ academy and had continued to play non-league football before turning to cricket.

During that time, Barker - who was signed as a batter - was key in the Bears’ 2012 County Championship triumph - he took eight wickets in the match as they secured the title against Worcestershire at New Road.
