Chris Woakes admits that “all options were on the table” last winter when injury forced his retirement from international cricket - but ultimately the biggest pull was from unfinished business with his beloved Warwickshire.
The Bears all-rounder, who played 62 Test matches and 155 white-ball games for England, did have last winter’s Ashes series very much on his radar. But a wrecked shoulder, sustained in the field in the Test against India at The Oval last July, changed all that.
Two months later, following discussions with England managing director Rob Key, the 37-year-old called time on his England career. That left him pondering the big question that eventually faces all longstanding international players: ‘Now what?’
