Once a Bear, Always a Bear - Michael Burgess

We ran the first marathon from Esher all along the Thames to Craven Cottage, Fulham, and then back again next day. It is something that I am very proud to have done for such a great cause as the Hunchman Trust.

Our very welcome guest on Once a Bear, Always a Bear this week is wicketkeeper/batter Michael Burgess. Michael played 130 matches for Warwickshire between 2019 and 2024 before retiring from cricket at the age of 30. He was an integral part of the Bears team which won the County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy in 2021.

Michael, many thanks for joining us. What are you earliest memories of cricket, either playing or watching the game?

Going down to Cheam Cricket Club, in Surrey, watching my brother play and dad coach. I was a couple of years younger than my brother so really tried to get involved and I remember once, as a seven-year-old, going to watch him play in an U9s game and one of the players went off Injured so I managed to get on the field for 20 overs. For a seven-year-old, that was a pretty big step into ‘proper’ cricket!
