Warwickshire will face Surrey at Edgbaston on Wednesday aiming to turn their Metro Bank One-Day Cup fortunes around – and put in a better display than their predecessors of 1969 managed on the London county’s first List A visit to Birmingham.
It was the first season of the 40-over Player’s County League (soon to become the John Player League), a competition which was to become a Sunday staple for cricket fans over the next two decades – but on this particular Sunday, the spectacle was brief. “The bottom had fallen out of Warwickshire’s Sunday League match with Surrey before late-lunchers had settled down to enjoy the Sunday afternoon,” wrote JM Solan in the Birmingham Post.
